How long will your standby generator keep the house running? Learn what fuel supply, electrical demand and maintenance mean for a long outage—and what to check before the next storm.
Quick answer: A well-maintained home standby generator can last 20 years or more, but age alone does not determine when it should be replaced. Run hours, maintenance history, operating conditions, corrosion, repair frequency and whether the generator still meets your home’s backup power needs all matter.
The most common reason a standby generator won’t start is a weak or dead battery. After that, the usual culprits are a fuel-supply problem, a low-oil shutdown, the controller being left in “Off” instead of “Auto,” or an overcrank lockout after the unit tried and failed to start. A few of these are safe to check yourself. The rest — battery, oil, fuel, and electrical work — belong with a technician.
A home standby generator should be professionally serviced about once a year. On top of that, the oil and filter need changing after the first 25 hours of run time, and the battery should be replaced every two to three years.
In New York City, a commercial backup generator usually belongs in one of three places: on the roof, at grade outside the building, or in a dedicated interior generator or mechanical room. The right answer depends less on convenience and more on code constraints: FDNY rooftop access rules, zoning screening and enclosure rules, structural capacity, flood exposure, exhaust routing, fuel storage or gas-service capacity, air-permit thresholds, and access for maintenance.
For some NYC businesses, that means life-safety systems, emergency lighting, fire alarm support, access control, sump pumps, servers, refrigeration, elevators, or key HVAC equipment. For others, it may also include tenant-critical systems, communications rooms, security infrastructure, or parts of the building automation system.
Carbon monoxide detectors are important if your home uses oil heat. That does not mean oil heat is inherently unsafe or that oil-heated homes are somehow uniquely dangerous.
A backup generator can do more than keep a few lights on. For many homeowners in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester, and Nassau, it can help protect comfort, safety, and daily routines when the grid goes down.
After a major winter storm, NYC building owners and property managers tend to discover the same unpleasant truth at the same time: heat problems rarely show up during the storm. They show up right after.
If you own or manage a commercial building in Brooklyn, this question matters more than most. When a winter storm hits New York City and the lights go out, tenants don’t ask what kind of heating system you have. They ask one thing: “Will we still have heat?”
