Backflow is a plumbing term for the reversal of the normal flow of water in a water system. When there’s a change in water pressure, the water can flow backwards into the city’s waterlines from a property’s water system – potentially contaminating the public water supply.
The New York City DEP requires the installation of backflow prevention (BFP) devices by a Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) to help keep water safe and clean by ensuring water flows in only one direction.
BFP devices are required for most buildings and properties including restaurants, laundries, medical facilities, properties with swimming pools, in-ground sprinklers, multiple water service lines, chemically treated boilers and other properties that pose a potential risk of contamination to NYC’s water supply. To ensure the backflow prevention device is working properly, initial testing is required after the device is installed. Then, annual testing is required to ensure the device is functioning properly. Annual testing must be completed prior to the anniversary of the device’s installation and must be completed by a New York State Certified and Licensed BFP Assembly Tester. Failure to comply could result in hefty fines and to the possible disconnecting of water services.
