When the power stays out, you want to know how long your generator can keep the house running. The answer comes down to three things: fuel, electrical demand and maintenance.
A standby generator may cover a multiday outage. But that does not mean it can run for days without a shutdown or an oil check. Here’s what to plan for.
How Long Can a Generator Run Before It Needs a Break?
Start with the owner’s manual for your model. There is no single runtime limit that applies to every standby generator.
For the air-cooled Next Generation and Guardian models covered by Generac’s continuous-use guidance, shut the generator down after every 24 hours of continuous operation. Leave it off for at least 30 minutes to cool and complete the required checks.
Those checks include the oil level, visible fuel or oil leaks, and debris around the vents. Follow the manual’s shutdown procedure. Do not simply switch the unit off while it is carrying your home’s electrical load. If you need help, contact a qualified generator technician.
This is different from how many years the equipment will last. For that, see our guide to standby generator lifespan.
Natural Gas vs. Propane: What Limits Your Fuel Supply?
Natural Gas
A natural-gas generator draws fuel from your property’s gas service. You do not have a tank to refill, but you still depend on that supply staying available. A gas-service disruption can stop the generator, too.
Propane
A propane generator runs on the fuel stored in your tank. How long that fuel lasts depends on your generator and how much electricity your home is using.
To estimate runtime, use this calculation:
Usable propane gallons ÷ gallons used per hour = estimated operating hours
Get the consumption rate from your generator’s specifications at the load you expect. Use the fuel actually available in the tank, not its total rated capacity.
For example, 100 usable gallons at one gallon per hour would provide about 100 operating hours. That is a math example, not a promise for your system. Demand can change, and maintenance stops still apply.
Does Using Less Electricity Help?
Yes. A lighter load generally uses less fuel. That can stretch a propane supply during a long outage.
Think about what needs to stay on. Heating equipment, refrigeration, lights and essential outlets may take priority over an EV charger, pool equipment or electric cooking. Central air conditioning and electric water heating can also add a large load.
Fuel use does not rise at a perfectly even rate as you add appliances. Use your model’s fuel-consumption chart instead of guessing. If you are planning an installation, our guide to choosing a whole-home backup generator explains sizing and load planning.
A New Generator Can Need Service Sooner Than You Think
A long first outage can bring a new generator to its break-in service interval in about a day. For most current Generac home standby models, that interval is 25 hours. For the 7.5 kW PowerPact, it is 20 hours.
Check the manual and your unit’s run hours before bad weather arrives. For routine service planning, read how often a standby generator needs service.
What Should You Watch During a Long Outage?
Your generator starts automatically, but it still needs attention. Follow its inspection schedule and watch for:
- Controller warnings or fault codes
- Unusual noise or vibration
- Visible fuel or oil leaks
- Snow, leaves or other debris blocking the vents
- Low propane levels, if your system uses a tank
- Run hours approaching a service interval
If something looks wrong, follow the equipment’s shutdown instructions and call for service. Do not attempt work you are not qualified to perform.
Going away? Arrange for someone who knows the system to check it and respond to alerts. Remote monitoring can help you spot a problem. It cannot check the oil or perform maintenance.
Can It Power the Whole House?
That depends on how the system was sized. Some installations support most household circuits. Others cover selected essentials.
Load-management equipment can temporarily limit certain appliances so they do not all run at once. The goal is to cover your household’s needs without overloading the generator.
Planning a Standby Generator in NYC
Runtime is only one part of the job. A permanent installation also needs the right location, electrical work and fuel supply.
NYC permit requirements depend on the project. Electrical installation, alteration and repair work requires the applicable permit and a New York City licensed electrician. Construction and gas or fuel work may need additional permits.
Small lots, nearby windows and neighboring buildings can make placement difficult. Read where a backup generator can be installed in NYC before choosing equipment. Westchester and Nassau County have their own local requirements.
Get Ready Before the Power Goes Out
Check your service records and current run hours. Clear the area around the generator. If you use propane, check the tank level and plan for the fuel you may need.
Have starting problems, warning codes or unusual operation checked before the next storm. It is easier to deal with those issues while you still have utility power.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can a Generac home standby generator run continuously?
Check your model’s manual. Generac’s current guidance for covered air-cooled Next Generation and Guardian models calls for a shutdown after every 24 hours of continuous use. Leave the unit off for at least 30 minutes for cooling and required checks.
Can a standby generator run for three days or a week?
It may supply power through an outage that long, but it still needs fuel, inspections and maintenance. Plan for the shutdowns and service required by your model.
How long will a propane standby generator run?
Divide the usable gallons in your tank by your generator’s hourly fuel consumption at the expected load. Use the specifications for your exact model. Changing electrical demand will change the estimate.
Can a natural-gas standby generator run indefinitely?
No. It needs a steady gas supply and must stay within its operating and maintenance requirements. A gas connection does not remove the need for service.
Does a new standby generator need maintenance during an outage?
It can. Most current Generac home standby models need break-in maintenance after 25 hours. The 7.5 kW PowerPact interval is 20 hours. Check your manual before the first long outage.
