Quick answer: If you would rather have your heating oil provider manage your refill schedule instead of checking the tank and placing each order yourself, switching from will-call to automatic heating oil delivery may make sense.
If you’re thinking about switching heating oil companies before winter, the process is usually manageable. The important part is getting the timing right.
Before ending service with your current provider, review any existing agreement, confirm that your new heating oil company serves your address, choose how you want future deliveries handled, and make sure the transition is coordinated before your tank gets too low.
If you have ever thought, “Why did my price change when winter is winding down?”, you are not imagining things. Heating oil prices are not a single dial that turns up in winter and down in spring. It is a stack of inputs that can move independently.
If your home uses heating oil, spring is usually when the question comes up: once the cold weather eases, should you leave the tank as it is, top it off, or let it run low until fall?
For many homeowners in NYC, Westchester, and nearby areas, the answer is not always obvious.
Carbon monoxide detectors are important if your home uses oil heat. That does not mean oil heat is inherently unsafe or that oil-heated homes are somehow uniquely dangerous.
If you’ve ever searched something like “how long will 1/4 tank of heating oil last?” or “does oil heat work without electricity?” you’re not alone. Those “how long” and “will it still work” questions are some of the most common reasons homeowners and property managers end up on Energo’s blog in the first place.
When the lights go out in a blackout, one of the unsung heroes that keeps critical systems running is often heating oil – in the form of diesel fuel for backup generators. Many buildings in NYC (and elsewhere) have emergency generators that kick on when grid power fails.
Delivering heating oil to a suburban house on a wide street is one thing – delivering to a Manhattan brownstone on a narrow, parking-scarce block is another. In dense urban neighborhoods like New York City, heating oil delivery comes with unique challenges.
Heating oil is not being banned all at once in New York City — but it is being phased out in clear, enforceable stages. The phase-out of heating oil in NYC buildings began more than a decade ago with the elimination of the dirtiest fuel oils and continues through a series of enforceable deadlines that extend into the 2030s and beyond.
When a winter storm knocks out electricity, most homeowners ask the same question: will my heat still work? If you have residential heating oil in NYC, it’s easy to assume you’re protected because your fuel is stored on-site.
