Green Energy in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland

PJM is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that coordinates and directs the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. PJM does not own power lines of generators, but rather serves as a neutral independent party to manage the electricity grid to ensure availability and reliability for more than 65 million users.

In 2022, the majority of power generation in PJM came from gas and nuclear sources. Below is a breakdown of the percentage of generation by each fuel source.

Gas40%
Nuclear32.3%
Coal20%
Wind3.7%
Hydroelectric1.9%
Solar1.1%
Waste0.5%
Oil0.3%
Biofuel0.2%

While most of the power supplied to the PJM grid comes from traditional electric generators, renewable and alternative energies continue to grow. In fact, many states within PJM’s footprint are increasing their renewable and clean energy standards to help reduce emissions, combat climate change, and even help grow their local economies.  For example, Pennsylvania is pushing for 18% of its total energy usage to be renewable by 2021, Maryland pushing for 50% renewable energy by 2030, and New Jersey pushing for 50% renewable energy by 2030, and 100% by 2050.

How Can I Help Support Green Energy in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland?

One way to support Green Energy is to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates, also known as Renewable Energy Credits or RECs.

RECs represent the amount of energy generated by renewable energy sources. For example, one REC is produced when a renewable energy source (i.e. a wind farm) generates one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity. So, if a wind farm produces 3 MWh of electricity, they have 3 RECs available to sell.

When you enroll in a Green Energy plan with Energo, RECs are purchased – ensuring that renewable energy sources from renewable generators are being put onto the grid on your behalf. The purchase of RECs supports green energy today and encourages the generation of more green energy tomorrow.
