New Jersey Benchmarking - Energo

New Jersey Benchmarking

New Jersey’s Clean Energy Act is one of the most ambitious Renewable Portfolio Standards in the country targeting 50% clean energy by 2030 and 100% by 2050 (with a new bill accelerating this goal to 100% by 2035).

In addition, New Jersey has established energy and water benchmarking requirements for commercial and multi-family buildings over 25,000 square feet.

How Does It Work?

Every year, building owners and property managers will be required to submit benchmarking data through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Portfolio Manager Tool. While the filing deadline is October 1, 2023, there is a 90-day grace period to complete submissions.

The annual benchmarking data enables building owners to track their energy costs, consumption, and CO2 emissions against other similar sized buildings – uncovering opportunities to improve energy efficiency and save on energy costs.

While building owners can file the NJ Energy Benchmarking themselves, it’s important to ensure the building’s data is accurate as any mistakes (such as incorrect building size, building use allocations, and occupancy) can negatively affect the reporting process.

Is Your Building Affected?

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has mailed notifications to affected property owners beginning in late June 2023. If your building is affected by these benchmarking requirements, Energo’s team of energy experts can help. We have been completing benchmarking services for our NYC customers for years, using the same Portfolio Manager tool. We’re also a NJ Certified Benchmarker, proficient with the NJ Benchmarking process.

If you believe your building is affected and you have not received a notification yet from the BPU, or you are looking for more information, visit https://njcleanenergy.com/commercial-industrial/programs/cea-benchmarking.
